Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...

Which game has the most stairs of all?

Asking this question today, our phantom mirror answers...

"The Godkiller - Chapter 1".

The Mirror then clarifies its answer in disturbingly legalistic detail...

Criteria of Evaluation

  • The game must be available in the real world to some group of people outside of its creators, allowing for provability.
  • Stairs are counted by the individual steps in a staircase.
  • The steps must be spaced in some way consistent with the expected needs of an in-game character to ascend or descend heights.
  • The steps must be traversable by an in-game character and have the function of ascent or descent. Otherwise, we must classify them as mere scenery, like painted backdrops on an old Hollywood lot.
  • If the direction of gravity may be altered such that an in-game character may use the former sides of steps as the tops of them, that does not double the count of stairs.
  • If the stairs are part of a looping topology, wherein it is possible to arrive at the same point on the stairs multiple times traveling in one direction, only stairs within the unique, non-looped portions of that game's scene will be counted. (Talking to you, Manifold Garden!)
  • Stairs which are generated algorithmically as the player advances through the game will not be counted. The stairs must have been placed within the game according to the designs of a human creator, and manifest with permanence from one session to another.
  • If a character within the game gazes unblinkingly multiple times at the player or other characters, these will not be counted as stairs. These will be counted as stares. And they are outside the scope of our discussion.

The Godkiller - Chapter 1 Stair Count

Erik calculates that The Godkiller – Chapter 1 contains a total of 15,840 steps, rising to a height of just under 4 kilometers. The Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, rises to 828 meters. The Godkiller’s height can accommodate thirteen Eiffel Towers stacked on top of each other. There are a lot of stairs in the game.

Challengers?

If you can supply some evidence of another game having a higher stair count according to the Criteria of Evaluation above, we will dutifully update this page to list information about that game. And if it's clear that the Mirror should give a different answer to the topmost question, we will bestow glory upon the game deserving it.
