GKWiki Inception and Purpose
In the beginning, there was The Godkiller - Chapter 1. Before that game was released, Erik Hermansen wanted to have this wiki up and serving the public. There were small numbers of people playing the game in its early unreleased form - mainly testers, team members, voice acting cast, and press. The wiki went up September 19th, 2021. With help from Alex Harby, it was populated with an initial set of content to give some basic info about the game, and importantly, hints to let players get past the early levels included in the 2021-released demos.
Erik did some search tests and formed the theory that for small to medium-sized games, if you establish your own hint site before larger sites, it's pretty likely that search sites like Google and DuckDuckGo will keep sending people to your site instead of say... IGN. And Erik particularly despised the use of walkthroughs (text or video) for puzzle games. They bluntly give more information than a player needs to solve a puzzle. And they can spoil parts of the game you haven't seen yet if you happen to glimpse ahead. Erik much preferred the progressive hint systems pioneered by Infocom in the 80's, and used extensively in Caravel Games Hints and Solutions board developed by Matt Schikore for the DROD series of games.
To establish a preferred means of nudging players in the right direction, GKWiki was started about 3 months before the Game Proper was released. At time of writing, we don't know if GKWiki will win the SEO struggle against the biggies. But we are hopeful. It has been done before - "drod hints" will give you Caravel's lovely site above the fold.
